So, you own a general contracting business and you’re feeling invisible online. This article will help. I’m going to tell you the best ways to build up your online visibility (for free) so when your ideal client is searching for your services, they’ll find you.
When a prospective client is searching for the services you offer, your business wants to be front-and-center. Oftentimes, your business is hidden. In this article, we’ll talk about how to stop your business from being invisible online – and it’s not as difficult as you might think.
Start with your Google Business Profile
Google is the biggest (and best) search engine in the world, and they try their best to provide searchers with the very best results.
When someone searches for a service on Google, Google wants to showcase the most relevant businesses to these folks. That’s why they created the Google Business Profile.
What is a Google Business Profile (GBP)
A Google Business Profile is a listing on Google’s business directory. It’s free to sign up and provides customers and clients with a bunch of information about your business.
Your GBP is part of Google Maps and offers an easy way for folks to find local businesses that serve the area where they’re searching.
How Google Business Profiles Work
Your Google Business Profile is an excellent way to gain visibility throughout your service area. When a person does a search, for instance: general contractor near me, at the top of Google, they will see the Google Map Pack.
As you can see, Google will display the top three or four businesses in the Map Pack. The Map Pack is where you want your profile to show up because it provides excellent FREE visibility for your contracting business.
But, how can you get your GBP into the map pack consistently? Keep reading…
How General Contractors Conquer the Map Pack
In order for your business to show up in the Map Pack consistently, you first need to make sure your GBP is fully optimized.
How General Contractors Should Optimize Their GBP
First, make sure all of the required information is filled in, like:
- Business name
- Phone number
- Hours of operation
- Business category
- Location or service area
Then you can move and fill out the rest of your profile. This includes:
- Cover photo
- Adding images & your business logo
- Adding a few FAQs in the Question & Answer section
- Filling out your business description
One Pitfall To Watch Out For
One pitfall I want to warn you about – Google loves to suggest additional services to add to your GBP. My suggestion – don’t do it. When you do this, you will dilute your profile.
Instead, just select a single category for your business (General Contractor) and differentiate your business by adding Products.
“But Dave, I don’t sell products, only services!”
Your services ARE your products. Let me give you an example.
As a general contractor, here might be a list of some of your services:
- Kitchens & Bathroom Remodels
- Home Additions
- Basement Remodels
- Custom Decks
Instead of adding each of these as additional services, you’ll want to create each as a ‘Product’ to your GBP. When you add a product to your profile, you’ll be able to provide a detailed description of the service along with an image and a link to that page on your website.
By doing this, Google will crawl the page on your website and be able to get a good sense of the different services you offer. Then when someone searches for one of those services, Google will start to show your profile in the Map Pack.
Other Directories To Consider
Although Google’s business directory is the largest and best, it’s important not to forget the other directories.
For General Contractors, here are some other places to add your business that will give you even more organic visibility.
- Home Advisor
- Better Business Bureau
Although these directories may not get as much traffic and searches as Google, some of these directories are niche-specific, catering to people searching specifically for general contractors.
Other Ways For Contractors To Improve Their Visibility
When we work with general contractors, we manage their Google Business Profile, which includes responding to reviews and questions within 24 hours, adding daily updates to their profile, and allowing our clients to add updates right from the job.
We do this with our check-in app, which allows general contractors to take a picture of the job site each day. They then open up our app, add the address where they are working, a short description of what they did (one sentence), add the picture and submit it.
That update then gets sent to their Google Business Profile in the ‘Update’ section, as well as landing on their website.
How does this help?
The app wraps your update in a special code that allows Google to understand exactly where you’re working on the map.
You see, as a service-area business, it’s more difficult to land in the Map Pack if you don’t have a physical location. Our app levels the playing field for general contractors.
By consistently posting these ‘hyper-localized’ updates to your GBP and website gets Google to pay attention and start highlighting your business in the Map Pack.
Visibility is one of the huge problems general contractors have online. They feel invisible and don’t know what to do about it.
By claiming your Google Business Profile and getting your business listed on the other ‘niche directories’ will really help customers find you online.
Once your contracting business is set-up on their directory platforms, the work doesn’t stop. You need to consistently manage and update your profile to show these directories that your business is actively working with clients.
